How to Deal With Hair Loss

No one wants to lose their hair. Sure, there are some people who choose going bald as a fashion statement or lifestyle choice. To reflect their strength of personality. But it’s a choice, not a condition. Going bald is increasing for both men and women, with more stigma for women by far. Men are lucky- they not only age with grace, and gain more respect or admiration- but women losing their hair is something that hasn’t been discussed until recently. Since the late 80s, men have two choices in balding options: shave it, or get plugs. Shaving your head speaks of machismo (look at Bruce Willis, or Sean Connery). It has a feeling of virility, and confidence in your appearance. It’s sexy. Getting plugs has come a long way from where it began- an awkward row of plucked hairs looking nowhere natural. The amount of cosmetic hair surgery specialists has also grown, giving men the options they’ve wanted for ages. Women balding, on the other hand, is the opposite. When women lose their hair, they lose their crowning glory. Their femininity and identity, in some ways. I think most women are horrified by the thought of losing their hair. But women have their options, too. There’s the scarf trend- with many designers incorporating the scarf as a real fashion complement. Wigs can be fun: you can change and alter your look- completely- with different wigs. Blond today, redhead tomorrow. Women are uncomfortable with wigs, especially if they’re obviously not real. But women have the same option as men, getting a hair-weave or plugs…or even shaving. Having a naked head can actually make a woman stand out more. More beautiful, with more focus on her features like eyes and lips. You don’t need hair to be an attractive and intriguing woman, you only need the attitude. The underlying story is, for both genders (regardless of age), you can go bald without losing yourself. Hair is only hair. When we look for partners, there are many other qualities that make us fall in love: a good heart. Nice eyes. A great connection. And not one of the lasting qualities requires a full head of hair.

Hair Loss Remedy and Treatment

The most obvious and noticeable part of the human hair is the hair on the head, which contributes a lot to a personâ??s good looks and beauty, and so the lack of it, or loss of it is always a source of distress to the person. Hair is an outgrowth that emerges from the follicles of the head and there are as much as 1 lakh follicles on the head. It is from these follicles that hair roots emerge .A single hair grows from one such hair root, and grows longer to a shaft, which is visible. The black color of the hair is due to a pigment called melanin, which is stored in a bulb found in the lower part of the hair follicle. One strand of normal hair looks so thin, yet it is very strong since it is made up of a protein called keratin. The hair that grows once is not permanent. It is shed periodically. There is a growth cycle and so it is normal for everybody to lose up to 50-100 hairs per day, which then are replaced by new ones. Actually at a time, about 10 percent of the hair on the scalp is in a resting phase while the other 90% is in growing stage. The hair in the resting stage falls off, once in every 2-3 months, only to be replaced by new ones. This growing phase lasts for 2 to 6 years and during this phase, each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter per month. If a person loses more hair than its growth and this loss is more than 50- 100 strands per day, the person is said to be suffering from hair loss. The disruption in the normal growth cycle of hair will lead to hair loss. Hair Loss: Hair loss can be caused by a variety of conditions ranging from sudden stress (caused by illness), certain types of medications (like those given in treatment of gout, arthritis, anticoagulants, and also during chemotherapy for cancer treatment), hormonal imbalances (like hyper or hypothyroidism caused by overactive or under active thyroid gland, or in case of imbalance of sexual hormones like androgens in males and estrogens in females2), poor nutrition, (also causes hair loss as the body is not getting enough proteins or vitamins needed for growth), fungal infection of the scalp( like psoriasis) , male pattern baldness3,( which is an inherited trait is the most common cause of hair loss in men.) Men who start losing their hair at an early age tend to develop more extensive baldness. In male-pattern baldness, hair loss typically results in a receding hairline and baldness on the top of the head. Women may also develop female-pattern baldness. In this form of hair loss, the hair becomes thin over the entire scalp. Alopecia areata is the development of bald patches on the scalp, beard, and, possibly, eyebrows. Eyelashes may also fall out. This condition is attributed to an immune disorder. Tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp) is another reason for hair loss. Finally, hair loss is also due to diseases (like lupus, diabetes).. But sometimes hair loss may occur out of sheer negligence and improper care of hair, even without any of these above mentioned problems. It can occur when lot of pressure is exerted on the scalp (by tying extra tight pigtails), or by excessive chemicals and hot oil –treatment used during perming. Such rough practices damage the hair follicles, which leads to hair loss.

So the underlying problem causing hair loss must be detected and treated accordingly. People experiencing hair loss must seek medical help from a dermatologist, so that the doctor can perform tests and investigate the cause. Blood tests will reveal hormone deficiencies like that of thyroid gland, estrogen or androgens. If a problem is detected, the doctor prescribes the synthetic hormone and thus hair loss can be controlled. In case of male pattern baldness, medicines may help in slowing down or preventing the development of common baldness. The most common one is, minoxidil (brand name: Rogaine), which is available even without a prescription. It has to be applied to the scalp and can be used by both men and women. However, another medicine, finasteride (brand name: Propecia) is available only with a prescription. It comes in the form of pills and can be taken by men only. Alopecia areata if treated early, can be treated with steroids injections like triamcinolone into the area. The other factors causing hair loss can be determined by the doctor by asking the patient a lot of questions to find out about his diet, family history and also his recent condition. . In cases of stress and illness hair loss is often temporary and hair will start growing once the body attains normalcy. In case hair loss is attributed due to a fungus or ringworm infection, antifungal preparations are given. The ultimate desperate measure one can take if no treatment arrests hair loss, is trying out different hairstyles or wigs, hairpieces, hair weaves or artificial hair replacement. This is also called hair transplantation, which has become more common over the years. During a hair transplant, healthy hairs are harvested from an area of the scalp with normal hair growth and then these individual hairs are then placed into areas of hair loss. The transplanted hair looks very natural if the procedure is done with dexterity.

Laser Hair Therapy: Hope for Women

Surprising though it may be, men are not the only ones suffering from Hair Loss. Yes, women lose their hair, too. Female pattern baldness is more common than you might think, although women tend to go to greater lengths than their male counterparts to hide their Hair Loss problem. After all, women are not supposed to go bald, right? As a society, we’ve come to accept men losing their hair as sort of the natural order of things. Despite generations of creams, snake oils and hormones that have little effect on the male hairline, men have mostly come to terms with their lot in the Hair Loss department. Women, on the other hand, have not. Why? Because a woman’s hair has always been tied to her beauty, vitality and well sexiness. Right or wrong, a woman without a full head of hair just feels less than her bountifully tressed counterpart.

Now there’s hope for women who are suffering from Thinning Hair or excessive Hair Loss. Laser Hair Therapy (LHT) has been in use in Hair Loss clinics around the world for some time, but with recent FDA approval, is only now being recognized in America as a viable Hair Loss Treatment. Laser Hair Therapy is a revolutionary approach to stopping Hair Loss in its tracks and even reversing it. How does it work? In simplest terms, Laser Hair Therapy approaches stopping hair loss in an entirely new way. It utilizes low-level laser light to stimulate proteins in the hair follicles and rejuvenate them, generating stronger, thicker hair and in many cases, regrowing hair that has been lost.

But before we can understand how Laser Hair Therapy reverses women’s hair loss, let’s look at what causes it. Women who lose hair because of genetics, over-active sebaceous glands or the conversion of hormones like testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – a leading cause of hair loss – tend to have a different pattern of Hair Loss than men. They lose hair in an all-over pattern, thinning mostly over the entire crown, as opposed to a receding hairline or circular bald patterns common to men. Women’s hair shafts get gradually thinner and thinner until parts of scalp become visible through the hair. Also, cycles of hair growth can be disrupted because of these same issues and the hair that might naturally grow back after a complete cycle of growth, fails to do so. The weakening proteins that feed the hair’s root simply cannot support it. Weak or thin hair shafts cannot compete with these roadblocks and eventually stop growing.

This is where Laser Hair Therapy for women can change the dynamic of your scalp. The low levels of laser light are generally delivered at a Hair Loss Clinic under a hair-dryer-like hood for twenty to thirty-minute increments. It’s completely safe and does not heat the scalp. Instead, low-level Laser Hair Therapy stimulates the proteins and the blood circulation around the hair follicle allowing it to shed any buildup of oil or DHT and to grow in strong. Many women see a difference after Laser Hair Therapy within three or four weeks. A very high percent of women notice hair regrowth typically within two to six months.

Remember, the body has it’s own cycles of hair growth and resting phases. In order for the hair to grow back, it must cycle into a growth phase. Most healthy hair tends to grow for 2-3 years and then goes into a resting phase before falling out. A new shaft will replace it in a few weeks and begin a new phase of growing. Laser Hair Therapy not only strengthens and thickens the hair you still have by allowing the root to absorb calcium and other vitamins, it clears the way for new growth of thick, healthy hair.

Laser Hair Therapy has been found to be useful not only in genetic Hair Loss, but in Hair Loss due to medical conditions such as prescription drug use, or chemotherapy and can clear up scaly, itchy scalp as well.

Robin Janes, a twenty-seven year old mother of two, began losing her hair after her pregnancies. While her friends were growing back thick hair after their pregnancies, her hair stubbornly refused to grow back. Robin felt embarrassed by her thinning hair and tried everything from thickening shampoos to hair extensions to cover it up. In the end, nothing really worked and she found herself hiding out in her house, or covering her head when she went out. Her friends didn’t care that she’d lost hair, but Robin couldn’t match up the old image she still had about herself with the one she now faced in the mirror every day. As a nursing mom, she couldn’t take drugs or use anything that might harm her baby.

Desperation drove her to find healthy alternative solutions. Laser Hair Therapy was the answer she was looking for. She found a nearby clinic and underwent regular Laser Hair Therapy treatments. She saw results quickly. Her hair began to grow back in the patchy places where she’d lost it. And the rest of her hair got thicker and healthier. Today, a year later, Robin can recognize herself in the mirror again. Laser Hair Therapy gave her hair exactly the boost it needed to recover from her pregnancy-induced Hair Loss.

Whatever your Hair Loss story, whether you’ve always been plagued by thinning hair or whether your hair loss has been caused by some medical crisis, Laser Hair Therapy may just be the answer you’ve been searching for. It’s an economical, non-invasive way to bring your hair back to life again.

Propecia Cause of Additional Hair Shed?

Our Orange County Hair Transplant Clinic recently received an email from one of our patients who was concerned about having experienced some hair shedding after taking Propecia. His concern is if the medication will continue causing hair shed and if there are additional side effects associated with Propecia. Also if having been “malnutrition” at the time and having a family history of hair loss might be the reason for his current situation.Propecia is a hair loss treatment supplement. It has been clinically tested and proven to aid in hair restoration and is the only FDA approved drug for safe consumption in males with male pattern baldness.  In some cases, an increase in hair shedding may be evident during the first few weeks or months.  Within or after 6 months of taking Propecia, hair growth should become more evident.  It’s highly suggested not to be discouraged so early in the treatment and not to expect results too early as well.  As for sexual side effects associated with Propecia, they have only been recorded in 1 out of every 100 patients tested and continued use has shown that side effects become minimal or non-existent.  If they do continue, you can take a lesser amount of Propecia or discontinue its use. Most people with a family history of hair loss may be more prone to male or female pattern baldness than others.  On the up side, if caught early the effects of hair loss can be prevented, slowed or corrected.  Malnutrition can cause some hair loss but that can only be attested to severe vitamin deficiency.  If your body is lacking in vitamins, vitamin supplements can help reverse that.  Just be sure to maintain a well balanced diet and vitamin deficiency should not be an issue. At the patient’s current state, we at our Hair Transplant Center of Orange County recommended that he start setting up a good relationship with a hair transplant surgeon to help monitor his progress and to suggest ways to prevent or correct current or future hair loss.  A proper diagnosis for his current hair loss is still necessary but once that is done we can better assess his personal situation and give him the options he needs to prevent or correct his situation.

FUE Hair Transplant

As hair loss problems are being faced by a substantial number of people, especially males, in the UK, FUE hair transplant as a therapy is fast gaining prominence. Its popularity is further boosted by the number of hair clinics that has come up in notable cities of the country providing professional help to avert and overcome this problem.

As claimed by trained professionals in the field, FUE hair transplant is the safest and the fastest way to acquire healthy hair and avoid baldness. This problem is often overlooked as shedding hair is a natural process and 100 shafts of hair are estimated to fall off naturally. If left untreated over a long period of time, the problem continues to grow, thereby, resulting in partial or complete baldness.

Since there are many reasons for hair fall like illness, side effects of drugs or chemicals used for a long period of time and hormonal changes, it is necessary to first detect the cause as FUE Hair transplant can be prescribed once the problem area is pointed out clearly.

Moreover, surgeons carry out thorough examination before they decide that a patient needs to undergo hair transplant. This is the reason why they suggest a graft calculation prior to a FUE hair transplant as the availability of grafts is crucial for the successful transplanting method.

In the hands of experienced surgeons, anyone can be assured of a satisfactory FUE hair transplant. That’s why, it’s best to avail the services of reputed hair replacement clinics in the UK. Not only they are known for their varied services and well trained staff, but they are the best places to turn to if one does not want the money to go waste or reel under the hazards of an improper hair transplant.

Usually, FUE hair transplant is safe and has no side effects. Surgeons use modern technology and surgical tools in the process, thereby, replacing the age old strip method. The follicle extraction as well as implantation is harmless and painless. The healing takes place within 7 days with absolutely no side effects. The result – new and healthy hair growth in the balding areas in a natural way.

However, care should be taken once the FUE Hair Transplant is done to maximise the benefits. Taking proper care of oneself and acting according to the suggestions provided by the surgeons is a must post the hair transplant session. Taking antibiotics or pain killers as prescribed, using medicated shampoos and keeping the scalp clean are some of the precautions that need to be taken to benefit from a FUE hair transplant.

Hair Replacement

Hair loss has always been a concern for men and women around the world. Baldness always share mixed emotions in public. Some may find it to be affluent and others find it to be aberrant. This is where hair replacement plays a vital role. As a modern scientific method, hair replacement aims at promoting natural hair growth in the balding areas of one’s head. Being a scientific process the results yielded are known to be good without any harmful effects.

A very common case of hair loss is male hormones called androgens. Susceptible hair follicles succumb to the androgens which results in early baldness. Anagen Effluvium is another major reason for hair loss. This mostly occurs when hair comes in contact with high concentration of radiation. Hair Replacement which involves ‘Follicular Unit Extraction’ is considered to be a good remedy in such cases. This method is performed by highly skilled surgeons and the final results are satisfactory. Considered to be one of the most efficient modes of replacing hair, the FUE hair transplant has made immense advancements.

It is a well proven fact that effects of radiation on hair are irreversible. With advancements in transplant technologies, hair loss can cause no worries any more. Many people today undergo stress and strain due to which hair loss is imminent. This is known as Telogen Effluvium. Hair loss in this case is immense but effective hair treatment techniques have made it possible to retain hair. Not only that but re growth of dead hair cells is now achievable. Latest hair replacement methods have increased the probability of hair re-growth. Scientific technologies have made it possible to create undetectable natural looking hair.

Many skin related diseases can cause immense hair loss for both body and head. Scarring Alopecia is one of these phenomenon’s which increase the chances of hair loss. Skin trauma can also be a major cause for hair loss. Today’s Hair Replacement therapies involve various drugs to fight and overcome hair fall.

Some causes of hair loss are independent to men and women. In women more often than men, the non pattern baldness can be noticed. Compulsive hair pulling is a psychological effect to either post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or emotional reasons. Medications along with a hair replacement therapy are often the perfect remedy to this problem. Apart from scalp hair, eyebrow hair for both men and women can now also be regenerated perfectly.

Eyebrow reconstruction as it is termed can be very fruitful for both men and women. Hair grafts are prepared under the microscope and then inserted into the eye brows using a 23 gauge hypodermic needle. This type of Hair Replacement is considered safe and produces artistic results.

Causes of Hair Loss Among Women

There are lots of people all over the world who are suffering from hair loss especially women have great percentage among all. No one has ever tried to know reasons for hair loss and people normally don’t bother to search reasons for hair loss. There are number of reasons for hair loss in men and women but among women hair loss is very common because of the following reasons.

Genetics:

One of the major causes of hair loss is genetics Research has shown that if any of parents has hair loss disease then it will likely to transfer to next generation. Such women have to take extra care to their hair otherwise, they can be bald. This happens by the actions of pair of enzymes called aromatase and 5-a reductase.

Menopause:

With the passage of time, estrogen level decreases in a woman and it is not produced in the same when she was younger and the result is hair loss. Hormonal imbalance because of menstrual cycle is also another reason for hair loss.

Medication:

There are certain medicines that cause hair loss among women and these medicines include diabetes medications, chemotherapy, antidepressants, auto immune disorders and scalp yeast infections. These all medications contain some elements that weaken the roots of hair and ultimately cause hair loss among women. Such medicines should be avoided. Every medicine should be consulted in advance with your doctor if you have hair loss problem with you.

Anxiety and Frustration:

Stress cannot be avoided and has become a part of our life. The best remedy is to stay relax and cool. Indulge is such hobbies that keep you fresh and nourishing.

These all factors are great contributors in hair loss and you can overcome them to some extent but cannot control them at all. There are many available treatments for hair loss but if you cannot eliminate these factors then you cannot find any permanent solution to get rid of hair loss. You should take healthy diet, make yourself relax, avoid such medications which have elements to weaken your hair and take proper medicine if you have got this hair loss in inheritance.

Hair Loss in Female

Hair loss in female occurs in more than one pattern. Hair Loss is caused by the actions of two enzymes; aromatase (which is found predominantly in women) and 5-a reductase (which is found in both women and men). The reason that women experience hair loss during and after menopause is that their estrogen levels decline. Female pattern alopecia affects approximately one-third of all susceptible women, but is most commonly seen after menopause. Common or “hereditary” baldness in women, also called female pattern alopecia, is genetic and can come either the mother’s or father’s side of the family. Various forms of estrogen can “oppose” androgens and thereby reduce their availability to the cell, by blocking androgen receptors. A woman who notices the beginning of hair loss may not be sure if the loss is going to be temporary or permanent – for example, if there has been a recent event such as pregnancy or illness that may be associated with temporary hair thinning.

In women more often than in men, hair loss may be due to conditions other than androgenetic alopecia. Because beautiful hair is a sign of youthfulness and longevity, hair loss can leave you feeling confused, helpless, frustrated and angry. Many women do not realize that hair loss can occur after pregnancy or following discontinuation of birth control pills. It may also follow any sudden physical or psychological stress to the body. Alopecia means baldness, but just as in men, it does not have to be complete hair loss. This is seen as hair thinning predominantly over the top and front of the head. Treatment of this type of hair loss includes immunomodulating therapies such as glucocorticoids, topical immunotherapy, or anthralin, or biologic-responce modifiers such as Minoxidil. The choice of treatment depends on the patient’s age, as well as the extent of hair loss.

Causes of Female hair loss:

The most common causes of hair loss in women are not related to inherited genes, but to temporary metabolic problems associated with pregnancy, unusual stress, thyroid hormone deficiency, chemotherapy, crash diets, major surgery, severe infection or high fever. A possibly autoimmune disorder that causes patchy hair loss that can range from diffuse thinning to extensive areas of baldness with “islands” of retained hair. Hair loss due to trichotillomania is typically patchy, as compulsive hair pullers tend to concentrate the pulling in selected areas. Hair loss due to this cause cannot be treated effectively until the psychological or emotional reasons for trichotillomania are effectively addressed. Certain drugs can also take their toll on once lush and healthy tresses.

Symptoms of Female hair loss:

The main symptoms are:

1. Thinning of hair over the entire head.

2. Mild to moderate hair loss at the crown or hairline.

Treatment of Female hair loss:

Treatment options for women are more limited than those available to men. A consultation with a skilled specialist to discuss your options is advised. The popular topical treatment Rogaine for women (minoxidil) can be used by women. And many women do hair restoration surgery to restore their hair. Hormone replacement pills, such as Prempro, plus Aldactone are better after menopause. Experienced hair transplant surgeons can often achieve excellent results in women with the new follicular unit and minigraft techniques. If treatment fails, or is not desired professional counseling might be of help. Perms, dyes and other cosmetic options can be used to give a fuller appearance to hair.
