Healthy, smooth and silky hairs are something that everybody wishes to have. But due to improper hair care, environmental pollution and stressful life it has really become a dream today. One should know the proper cause of his or her hair loss to cure the hair loss problem from the root. Hair Loss Causes

• Hormonal problems are one of the main causes of hair loss. If your thyroid gland is under active or overactive, you will suffer the problem of hair loss. This hair loss generally can be cured by treatment of the thyroid disorder. Hair loss may occur if androgens (male hormones) or estrogens (female hormones) are out of balance. Clinical treatment of hormone imbalance may stop your hair loss.

• Pregnant women also notice hair loss problems within a period of about 3 months after delivery. During pregnancy, high levels of particular hormones cause the body to keep hair that would normally fall out. When the hormones return to pre-pregnancy levels, that hair falls out and the normal growth and loss cycle starts again.

• Some fungal infections also cause hair loss. Generally, children may have hair loss problems caused by a fungal infection of the scalp. This type of fungal infection can be easily treated with antifungal medicines.

• Certain medicines (mainly sulphur drugs) can cause hair loss. This type of hair loss problem improves when you stop taking the medicine. Medicines that can cause hair loss include anticoagulants (also known as blood thinners), medicines utilized in chemotherapy to treat cancer, medicines used for gout, vitamin A (if too much is taken), birth control pills, and antidepressants.

• If you have undergone a major operation or have suffered a prolong illness you can face the problem of hair loss. However, this hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary.

Hair loss is a very sad occurrence that is experienced by people both young and old. It has been a cause of great distress for people, mostly men, not only because it greatly affects one’s appearance negatively but also because it could be an indication of some health problem lying underneath.
Types of Hair Loss
The manifestations of hair loss encompass a wide range of expression from mild thinning of the hair to the complete loss of hair. While people normally shed hair everyday, there are cases when the head sheds more than the usual amount of hair, and this results into balding. People experience different kinds of hair loss:
1. Telogen effluvium – this usually happens during episodes of great body stress such as after a major operation, a long bout of sickness, or a serious infection. This type of hair loss happens usually around two to three months of the stressful period and becomes evident by unusual amounts of hair in shower sink, a pillow, or on a comb.
2. As a sign of a disease – loss of hair can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition such as syphilis, lupus, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, vitamin and mineral deficiency, hormonal imbalance, and other illnesses.
3. As a drug side effect – some medication can cause temporary or permanent hair loss. Among drugs that are known to have hair loss as a side effect are amphetamines, warfarin, beta-blockers, lithium, heparin, levodopa, among many others. Drugs used for cancer chemotherapy are also very known for their hair thinning effects.
4. Traumatic alopecia – this is the technical term used to refer to hair loss due to blunt forces such us when using abusive hair styling techniques that subject the hair and scalp to pulling, tight braiding, extreme heat, and harmful chemicals.
5. Tinea capitis – this is a fungal infection that occurs on the scalp. With this condition, hair breaks off from the surface of the scalp forming patches that lack hair. Children are susceptible to this form of hair loss.
6. Alopecia areata – this type of hair loss is due to unknown causes. What experts know is that the immune system fights the body itself causing follicles to weaken and hair to fall out. This could result into total hair loss, technically known as alopecia totalis.
7. Androgenetic alopecia or hereditary pattern baldness – this is a form of hair loss typically experienced by men, running in families. This is caused primarily by hereditary factors in conjunction with male hormones (e.g. testosterone) and aging. Women may also experience this type of hair loss, but it occurs rather rarely.
Manifestations of Hair Loss
A normal head loses around 50 to 100 hairs a day. Going beyond this range is a sign of abnormal hair loss. Most people discover hair loss when they see unusual amounts of hair on their brushes and clothing or in drains of their bathrooms.
To diagnose hair loss, a doctor, usually a dermatologist would examine a person’s medical history, nutritional profile, and hair styling habits. One may also be tested or fungal infection or other diseases.
Preventing Hair Loss
Doctors usually recommend having a healthy diet, decreasing stress, and proper hair care to prevent hair loss. Doctors also avoid prescribing medication that may cause hair loss for people who have evident tendencies of getting bald.
Treatment for Hair Loss
Hair loss can be treated according to the cause of the condition. Drugs that cause hair loss should be discontinued. A healthy diet and a relaxed lifestyle is prescribed for stress-related hair loss. Underlying diseases that cause hair loss are to be treated accordingly. Some drugs that promote the growth of hair may also be prescribed for extreme cases of hair loss.
Hair loss can be a devastating portion of a person’s life no matter how people say that it hair is just an indispensable part of the body. Knowing about hair loss is a key step in preventing it from happening or stopping it from occurring.

The effectiveness of modern, natural hair care products is known to all, because they are very effective in reducing hair loss and enhancing hair beauty. They are also perceived as being free from side effects and may deliver additional health benefits. To be healthy, hair needs proper vitamins and minerals. Natural hair care products have become common for both external and internal use. In addition, they have fewer ability of causing over-treatment and they rarely harm your hair.Using the appropriate hair care and beauty products is essential for the look and healthiness of your hair. But, the problem with natural hair care products is that you may find it challenging to choose one that is appropriate for you and your hair. Most of the products existing in the market today, bear a “Natural” label, whether real or fake making it harder to get a high-quality natural hair care product. There are four types of hair care products. The four basic natural hair care products are: Hair cleansing products, hair conditioners, hair remedies and hair nutrition products. What Are Natural Hair Care Products? You may find lot of hair care products not all natural. Products offered in salons and over store counters are never 100% natural, because, for better results and conservation issues, they need to contain a particular amount of artificial ingredients. The artificial products can also provide better foaming, cleaning and emulsifying than 100% natural products. However, you can prepare various home made hair care products that are definitely natural. You probably saw some organic hair growth products and equaled that with natural hair growth products. However, they are something else. Organic does not mean natural. You can make organic products synthetically and those products are not always safe, gentle and effectual. Some Natural Hair Care Products.Nettle Root Extract: It has been used for centuries for shampoo and hair tonics. People also used it as a spring tonic, after a dark winter with no greens.Saw Palmetto Extract: It appears to possess 5-?-reductase inhibitory activity (thereby preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone). Some beleive that it may help promote hair growth.Rosemary and Sage: These are very fine natural hair enhancers. Boil at the same time in water rosemary, sage, peach leaf, nettle and burdock and treat your hair. Your hair will be stronger.Henna: Henna is a popular natural hair conditioner and hair coloring product. It is outstanding for the maintenance of healthy hair. It protects hair against hairline fracture and restores hair shine.Jojoba Oil: It treats dandruff. Jojoba oil is also a great moisturizer for your hair. Your scalp will be healthy.Aloe Vera: It cleans the pores and helps balancing the pH level of your scalp. Shampoo With aloe vera with a small amount of wheat germ oil and coconut milk is a splendid hair enhancer. Psyllium husk: Psyllium husk works as a laxative agent, it safely move waste through the colon. And makes your digestive system clean healthy, which is necessary for better hair health.

Hair loss has been one of the most distressing factors in the recent times. In Britain alone, it accounts for 7.4 million men who are affected and looking for cure of hair loss and/or a cure for baldness. There are evidences of people suffering from depression and nervous breakdown. Scientists have been working round the clock to come out with a suitable hair loss remedy and baldness cure.Medical hair restoration basically involves tiny cells on the scalp, called dermal papilla cells. They are found at the bottom of the hair follicle and are responsible for the growth of new hair.

Before opting for hair restoration treatment, it is mandatory to consult your hair restoration doctor who can provide information regarding your hair loss and causes of baldness. Depending upon the type and amount of hair loss, you can evaluate various hair restoration options. Also, you will be able to see for yourself the various equipment and material being used for hair transplant procedure and weigh the cost range accordingly. Your hair restoration doctor should be qualified and proficient enough to determine your actual baldness pattern, your candidacy for a hair transplant, and then recommend a hair restoration plan that is tailor-made for you and suits your overall personality.

Follicular Unit Micro Grafting is one of the most commonly chosen hair restoration procedure. This technique involves surgical transplantation of hair follicles in a relatively simple outpatient procedure.

During Follicular unit micro grafting, the donor hairs are removed in form of a single strip from the back of the head- the area that is not susceptible to ever going bald. The site is closed by stitching which heals up with time and gets disguised by hairs from all sides. The donor strips, called micro grafts, are transplanted into bald or thinning areas on the top and front of the head with the help of microscope. The sites to which they are implanted are termed as recipient sites. There are two to four hairs in each follicular unit micro graft. These grafts are placed at the recipient site in such a manner that one of the grafts gives the hair line while others increase the density of the hair. As a result, hair transplantation by use of follicular micro grafts virtually goes undetected.

To undergo follicular unit micro grafting, look for a good and reputed hair restoration clinic as it involves considerable degree of expertise. It requires trained manpower to cut each graft under the microscope. The procedure needs to be performed in a safe and sterile environment while the person undergoing hair restoration is under local anesthesia or a mild short acting sedative. However, it has been generally revealed by persons having undergone the treatment to be a painless process.

Post treatment procedures are very simple. You can go home and relax for the day. Only mild antibiotics need to be taken to prevent any chances of swelling. While normal activities may be resumed from the next day, doctors advise restrain from strenuous exercise for a period of about two weeks. A visit to the hair restoration clinic the next day is recommended to have your hair shampooed and combed. The stitches are removed from the donor site after a week.

A promising change starts becoming evident within two to three months, sometimes even earlier. A regular dose of Minoxidil is also recommended to be applied to the hairs to promote growth, but I would recommend consulting your doctor before applying it. Normal hair loss and thinning of hair can be restored within one session but occasionally, second or third session is also carried out on persons depending upon the need.

Generally no cost is charged by the hair restoration clinics for post treatment, shampooing and removal of sutures. However, it should be clarified with the hair loss doctor before undergoing the treatment.

Follicular unit micro grafting has been instrumental in giving hair to quite a number of people. Hair restoration clinics have perfected the procedure and are on the job to reduce hair loss and cure baldness. This low stress, organized and result-driven practice may give you a new outlook for which you have been yearning since long.

Janice is a mother of two and is her in mid 30s. She is very concerned about her looks and visits the gym three times a week. As a family, they move out on weekends for trekking and other adventure activities which refresh them as well as keep them physically fit. All was going fine until the last Monday when she noticed a strand of grey hair while she was getting ready to go for work. Her body always supported her young looks but her hair seemed to be giving up. Her friend quickly suggested her to go for hair coloring to conceal her grey hair. Till date she hadnâ??t had any problem related to hair loss or dandruff and all of a sudden there was this mark to tell her she was aging. She paid a visit to ascertain the effectiveness of hair color. She followed the process thoroughly and there she was sporting a new younger look as never before.

Hair coloring has been prevalent with both men and women. Today, when our work culture demands a young and smart look, even middle aged people are concerned and working on their looks. Be it hair loss treatment or dandruff cure or grey hair, people want to get rid of it, or hide it to make them look smarter and better.

Before opting for hair color it is important that you go for a skin allergy test to make sure that your skin is not affected by hair coloring chemicals. Hair coloring kit comes with three things mainly the colorant tube, developer milk and hand gloves.

Hair colorant tube contains olive oil to give it a semi solid state and make it easy in applying to the hair. It contains various hair coloring chemicals such as phenylenediamines, diaminophenols, resorcinol and ammonia. The amount of phenylenediamine and ammonia in a hair colorant tube is generally not more than 28mg per grams and 22.2mg per grams.

Developer milk is basically a liquid solution which contains hydrogen peroxide and together with the colorant forms a thick paste.

The hair colorant and developer milk are taken in adequate quantity depending upon the amount of hair. This mixture is stirred well till the time it forms a thick paste. The paste should not be made in a metallic bowl. Try using a plastic piece instead. Once the paste is ready, it should be applied to the hair. Avoid any time gap in application of the paste after it is ready. The paste should be applied to the hair while wearing hand gloves to avoid any irritation in the skin later on. Leave the paste in the hair for 45- 60 minutes and rinse the hair well to wash out the color from other parts of the scalp.

It is very important to know that hair coloring chemicals are not to be used for coloring of eyebrows and eyelashes. The chemicals in the coloring tube may be harmful for the eyes. Rinse your eye immediately if they have come in contact with the coloring material. Also, keep the tool kit away from the reach of children to avoid any misuse.

Shampoo your hair to make it look silky and smooth after you have applied the hair color. Your grey hair is going to remain colored if you apply the color in a regular manner depending upon your requirement.

The most obvious and noticeable part of the human hair is the hair on the head, which contributes a lot to a personâ??s good looks and beauty, and so the lack of it, or loss of it is always a source of distress to the person. Hair is an outgrowth that emerges from the follicles of the head and there are as much as 1 lakh follicles on the head. It is from these follicles that hair roots emerge .A single hair grows from one such hair root, and grows longer to a shaft, which is visible. The black color of the hair is due to a pigment called melanin, which is stored in a bulb found in the lower part of the hair follicle. One strand of normal hair looks so thin, yet it is very strong since it is made up of a protein called keratin. The hair that grows once is not permanent. It is shed periodically. There is a growth cycle and so it is normal for everybody to lose up to 50-100 hairs per day, which then are replaced by new ones. Actually at a time, about 10 percent of the hair on the scalp is in a resting phase while the other 90% is in growing stage. The hair in the resting stage falls off, once in every 2-3 months, only to be replaced by new ones. This growing phase lasts for 2 to 6 years and during this phase, each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter per month. If a person loses more hair than its growth and this loss is more than 50- 100 strands per day, the person is said to be suffering from hair loss. The disruption in the normal growth cycle of hair will lead to hair loss. Hair Loss: Hair loss can be caused by a variety of conditions ranging from sudden stress (caused by illness), certain types of medications (like those given in treatment of gout, arthritis, anticoagulants, and also during chemotherapy for cancer treatment), hormonal imbalances (like hyper or hypothyroidism caused by overactive or under active thyroid gland, or in case of imbalance of sexual hormones like androgens in males and estrogens in females2), poor nutrition, (also causes hair loss as the body is not getting enough proteins or vitamins needed for growth), fungal infection of the scalp( like psoriasis) , male pattern baldness3,( which is an inherited trait is the most common cause of hair loss in men.) Men who start losing their hair at an early age tend to develop more extensive baldness. In male-pattern baldness, hair loss typically results in a receding hairline and baldness on the top of the head. Women may also develop female-pattern baldness. In this form of hair loss, the hair becomes thin over the entire scalp. Alopecia areata is the development of bald patches on the scalp, beard, and, possibly, eyebrows. Eyelashes may also fall out. This condition is attributed to an immune disorder. Tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp) is another reason for hair loss. Finally, hair loss is also due to diseases (like lupus, diabetes).. But sometimes hair loss may occur out of sheer negligence and improper care of hair, even without any of these above mentioned problems. It can occur when lot of pressure is exerted on the scalp (by tying extra tight pigtails), or by excessive chemicals and hot oil –treatment used during perming. Such rough practices damage the hair follicles, which leads to hair loss.

So the underlying problem causing hair loss must be detected and treated accordingly. People experiencing hair loss must seek medical help from a dermatologist, so that the doctor can perform tests and investigate the cause. Blood tests will reveal hormone deficiencies like that of thyroid gland, estrogen or androgens. If a problem is detected, the doctor prescribes the synthetic hormone and thus hair loss can be controlled. In case of male pattern baldness, medicines may help in slowing down or preventing the development of common baldness. The most common one is, minoxidil (brand name: Rogaine), which is available even without a prescription. It has to be applied to the scalp and can be used by both men and women. However, another medicine, finasteride (brand name: Propecia) is available only with a prescription. It comes in the form of pills and can be taken by men only. Alopecia areata if treated early, can be treated with steroids injections like triamcinolone into the area. The other factors causing hair loss can be determined by the doctor by asking the patient a lot of questions to find out about his diet, family history and also his recent condition. . In cases of stress and illness hair loss is often temporary and hair will start growing once the body attains normalcy. In case hair loss is attributed due to a fungus or ringworm infection, antifungal preparations are given. The ultimate desperate measure one can take if no treatment arrests hair loss, is trying out different hairstyles or wigs, hairpieces, hair weaves or artificial hair replacement. This is also called hair transplantation, which has become more common over the years. During a hair transplant, healthy hairs are harvested from an area of the scalp with normal hair growth and then these individual hairs are then placed into areas of hair loss. The transplanted hair looks very natural if the procedure is done with dexterity.

There are many natural remedies for thinning hair and hair loss that you can try. This article details various exercises that help relieve stress and reduce your body’s levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which has a strong connection with androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness and female diffuse thinning). Herbal remedies for hair loss are also included.

Exercises for hair health

These are the sorts of things you can do that, over time, may give slight improvements to the health and growth of your hair. However, like any holistic approach, these home-made natural remedies for thinning hair and hair loss will take time. So it’s important that, if you do decide to try some or all of these ideas, you must commit yourself to doing them regularly for several months.

1. Slow deep breathing

It might sound unlikely, but deep breathing can increase your energy levels by delivering more oxygen to your blood. This can help nourish your scalp follicles.

2. Neck stretches

Tilts – keep your head facing forwards and tilt left then right. Turns – turn your head as far left, then as far right as you can without straining. Nods – nod your chin down to your chest. Then lift your head back and up.

Combined with slow deep breathing, these exercises will help relieve tension in the neck and improve circulation to some extent. You will need to repeat each exercise several times.

3. Head and neck massage

These feel good and can probably encourage an increase in circulation to the scalp for a short period of time. Importantly, they’ll also reduce stress too, which again should help scalp circulation slightly.

4. Gravity exercises

Another home remedy for thinning hair involves the use of gravity. Various ideas exist, but shoulder stands (with or without a wall to prop yourself up) are probably the fastest way to increase blood flow to the scalp. A less extreme version would be to simply lying on your back and lifting your legs up against a wall. You could even lie on a bed with your head over the side.

5. Aerobic exercise

Cycling, swimming, jogging, walking, etc tend to lower testosterone levels. This, in turn, lowers DHT levels which might mean less hair loss. Note: Heavy weightlifting exercises will make DHT levels increase (which is why bodybuilding has been linked to hair loss).

Herbs and Plant Extracts

Herbal hair loss products usually take the form of topically (externally) applied creams, lotions and ointments. These are usually promoted as natural remedies for thinning hair and hair loss since many people prefer to avoid drug products that can cause side effects. However, most of these products also contain man-made chemicals within the ingredients list.

Many herbs and plant extracts can be taken internally too so you can address your hair loss problem from both the outside and inside.

But these products can be quite expensive when you consider that you’ll need to keeping using them long-term or even permanently to produce and keep any benefits you see in your hair.

Given that some of these plants might be growing in your backyard, you might like to try harvesting them yourself when the season is right – for example, you can collect nettles in the spring and make your own nettle tea or topical application.

Clearly, many natural remedies for thinning hair, hair loss and alopecia will also involve the foods you eat and supplements you take. To find out what vitamins for hair loss you need, click here.

Examples of symptomatic factors include an increase in DHT and 5 alpha reductase levels within the hair loss region of the scalp. and so herbs and plants that are 5 alpha reductase inhibitors and DHT blockers will typically be used in both topical and oral products.

Herbs and plant extracts that are said to help hair loss include:

Essential oils

Essential oils are associated with many beneficial effects for both the mind and body. Over the years, many have been used as natural remedies for thinning hair, hair loss as well as other skin and hair conditions. They are extremely concentrated and should normally be applied using a base or carrier oil (olive oil is especially good for healthy hair growth and removing residues from your scalp). Methods of application include: hair oil, rinse and massage.

These are the essential oils which, amongst others, are said to be beneficial for your hair:

Essential oils have an extremely pungent smell, so application at night and washing out in the morning is probably the best option. (Note: some oils such as Lavender are also good for relaxation, so they might also help you sleep, whereas others such as Basil are stimulants and so might keep you awake).

Note: If you have any existing condition that might be affected by any of the exercises or herbs mentioned (e.g. hypertension, heart condition, glaucoma, detached retina, etc) you should consult with a doctor before trying them.

So, will any of these ideas provide you with a real cure for thinning hair?

Unfortunately it’s most likely that none of the natural remedies for thinning hair described on this page will solve your hair loss problem on their own. But, by trying several approaches for several months, you might notice some benefit in the health of your hair.

A new natural remedy for thinning hair that works:

I myself very much believe a natural approach can produce results as good as any hair loss drug, and in some cases, far exceed what you might achieve from these potentially harmful pills and topical lotions.

Hair loss affects up to 80% of men and 50% of women, and in most cases androgenetic alopecia is to blame. This article explains how Skull Expansion is the true cause of genetic hair loss and why the conventional reasons given to explain it are wrong!

There’s no doubt that male hormones (androgens) somehow cause hair loss in those with the genetic predisposition towards it. Furthermore, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the androgen directly linked to this process.

However, genetics and male hormones do not fully explain the exact mechanism that will cause hair loss to start. Thatâ??s because they canâ??t answer the following questions: Q1. Why do some people lose hair from the front (receding temples), the back (a bald patch), or both these regions of the scalp?Q2. Why is it that hair can fall faster in one region of the scalp than it does in the other, and start at different times in a person’s life? (E.g., about 20% of men start losing their hair at puberty but most don’t start until theyâ??re much older).Q3. How can DHT be linked to both hair loss and hair growth? (DHT will, during puberty, stimulate hair to grow in other parts of the body).

These are all very relevant questions about the hair loss process. So, itâ??s important that complete and accurate answers are given before any theory can be acknowledged as the true underlying cause of androgenetic alopecia.

It now seems more likely that the actual mechanism that causes this type of hair loss is Skull Expansion. Hereâ??s a very brief explanation of how this process causes genetic hair loss:

When youâ??re growing up into an adult, your skeleton obviously gets bigger and bigger. This, of course, includes the skull, which not only grows in size but also changes shape.

Once you reach adulthood, this process (called bone remodelling and resorption) then continues throughout life. For some, this simply involves maintenance of the bones (i.e., keeping them strong and healthy). But, for those who suffer hair loss, this process will cause the frontal and parietal bones of the skull to grow.

This is Skull Expansion, and is the direct cause of hair loss within the male pattern baldness (MPB) region of the scalp.

The genetic link to male pattern baldness is due to the skull shape you inherit. Different skull shapes will have different growth potential (this simply means that the predisposition towards Skull Expansion will vary). The extent to which you lose hair is directly related to the extent to which your skull will expand. Obviously this means that greater Skull Expansion will cause more hair loss.

Only Skull Expansion can provide answers to all of those earlier questions: A1. Hair loss at the front is caused by Skull Expansion of the frontal bone. A bald patch at the back is caused by Skull Expansion of the parietal bones. And hair loss at the front and back of the scalp simultaneously, is caused by Skull Expansion of both frontal and parietal bones.A2. The different rates of hair loss between the front and back of the scalp depend upon the skull shape you inherit and its growth potential. Thatâ??s why your hair loss could start as early as puberty or much later on in life. A3. DHT can stimulate hair growth, but it also encourages bone growth. Androgens like DHT are steroid hormones which have an anabolic effect on bone formation (i.e., they make it grow!) DHT causes Skull Expansion, which then causes hair loss to start.

So, now you know that the true cause of genetic hair loss is Skull Expansion. And, should you be in any doubt, why not simply contact a hair specialist, ask those questions, and see what answers you get!

What is hair loss?

Most men and women experience some amount of normal hail loss everyday. This happens because after the end of every growth cycle, the hair naturally falls off, resulting in hair loss. But, one needs to start worrying only when the hair loss is excessive. Different patterns of hair loss

Men and women have different patterns of hair loss. For men it is called the Male pattern baldness and for women it is called the Female pattern baldness.

Though, in some very rare viral infections, men and women may experience extreme hair loss conditions like alopecia universalis, where the whole body is completely devoid of any hair. Characteristics of hair loss in men

In men, most of the hair loss follows the male pattern of baldness. In this type of baldness, a man finally ends up having hair left in the back and on the sides of the head, which from afar looks like the horse shoe. Typically there is no hair on top of the head.

For some men, the hair loss starts with a withdrawing hairline, while for some the hair loss happens from the top of the head. It is very common for men experience hair loss from the crown as well as have a receding hairline at the same time. Generally the hair at the back of the head falls at the very end. Characteristics of hair loss in women

In women hair loss happens through the general thinning of the hair from the entire scalp. In most women the entire head is never completely bare of all the hair, but it may be so sparse that the scalp may be clearly visible. But for both men and women the hormone related hair loss is mostly not reversible. Why does hair loss happen?

There are numerous reasons for hair loss.

1. The most common cause of hair loss is the presence of high quantities of the hormone Dihydrotestrostone in the scalp. DHT i.e. Dihydrotestrostone is a byproduct of the male hormone testosterone. In men and women, hair growth happens during the cycle of growth-dormant-re-growth. When the levels of the hormone DHT is there in high levels in the scalp then the period of rest or dormancy is longer for the hair. Thus each hair follicle produces hair for a limited period and then it finally goes into a period of complete rest and then eventually stops producing any more new hair. It has been observed that in men even though the hormone DHT is present in the whole scalp, the hair loss is most prominent on top of the head. Compared to the crown, the hair follicles in the side and in the back of the head do not experience the harmful effects of DHT.

2. Even high levels of sebum present in the hair are responsible for hair loss. Sebum is responsible for blocking the pores of the hair follicles, and this subsequently leads to undernourishment of the hair and results in hair loss. That is why it is imperative to keep the hair clean by washing the hair so that the blocked pores open up and the hair is nourished all the time.

3. Crash diets, lack of healthy nourishing also cause hair loss. But in such cases, if food intake is improved then the hair loss can be reversed to a large extent. A diet rich in protein and iron helps to arrest hair loss.

4. Lifestyle changes and nervous tension is also responsible for hair loss. Thus it is imperative that men and women try and de-stress their lives as much as possible. Can hair loss be treated?

Yes, to some extent hair loss can be treated. One of the first steps to treat hair loss is to partake of nourishing, healthy food. Since hair is made up of the protein keratin, men and women require different quantities of protein to keep their hair healthy. While women require about 60 grams of protein daily to keep their hair healthy, men need about 90grams of protein. Many a times even after improving the diet of person hair loss cannot be prevented. In such cases hair loss can be treated through laser, surgical and non-surgical restoration.

There is no miraculous cure to hair loss. No matter which treatment an individual opts for one has to be patient to see the changes. Because, between the growth cycles hair follicles have long periods of inactivity, which could last up to 3 months. It takes several months for any individual to notice any significant changes in hair loss.
